I would also check the timing advance springs and the condition of the hub the rotor sit on. turn it in the direction of rotation it should return back on its own. Also see how much slop is in the shaft, if it moves all over side to side it makes it darn near impossible to set the points. The part is kind of spendy, but a new one will make quite a difference.
