What happened was the nut unscrewed off the camshaft, fell thru the timing gears and tore up corners a few gear teeth on it's way down. The tractor continued to run like this for 7 or 8 years, though with a loud knock at idle (cam gear sliding back and forth and slapping the timing cover). The only parts replaced were the cam gear, Woodruff key and keeper under the nut. The tractor now runs like new...
