My '46 H came with no thermostat, too. It's a pretty easy chore to put one in. In addition to having a new thermostat you'll be wanting the gasket that goes between the thermostat part of the housing and the water pump. And if the hose to the top of the radiator is old now would be a good time. Mine had a brand new hose; the engine had just been rebuilt. With no thermostat. Go figure. The hardest part of the job is keeping the thermostat in position while fighting the hose back over the housing.
