Casting numbers on an H

I was told that the last letter on the casting dates on my H stands for the year in which the piece was cast. In my example, 5/24 O would indicate that the piece was cast on May 24th of 1945 - in that an O is for the year 1945 and a P would therefore be for casting from 1946. My question is this: is this correct and if so, does anyone have a complete list of the letter / year relationhips?
