This subject came up in a series of posts several months (maybe a year or so) ago. Yes, the power can be GREATLY increased. The M left the factory with a rating somewhere in the mid-30hp range. By putting in oversize (thin-wall) sleeves and matching high-compression pistons, dramatic power increases resulted. I've got a '49 M that has oversize M&W sleeves and pistons, a very sensitive after-market Thompson governor, and the upper rpm range set at about 2100 or so. It dyno tested at a local IH dealership a few years ago at 52hp. It is VERY eager under load. I'm told that a long-stroke crankshaft can be put in these beasties and push the hp limits into the upper 60 to low 70 range and still render them useable for farm work. I have no personal experience with one of these setups. I would have serious doubts as to the life expectancy of the transmission under those circumstances!
