I'm sorry if I didn't make my self clear to you. I am in no way against paying to pull especially if the money is being used as a fund raiser for some needy group. I am against paying to pull where the money is going to fill the pockets of some individual or corporation. I have seen this happen all to often in other motorsports.
The participants will pay whatever just so they can race (or in this case pull). they don't stop to think about how much money is being generated.
If you have a pull with 120 hooks per day at $10 per hook your talking $1200 coming from the participants and let's say there are 200 spectators who paid $5 each to watch, there is another $1000. I can imagine that the larger pulls could draw many times this number of spectators and probably higher ticket prices. Now if you have a 2 day event then your talking $4400 and you can add any parking fees, camping fees, t-shirt sales, etc. these can really add up!
As far as I can see it would be fairly lucrative to hold a pull. That's what I'm complaining about.
I'll admit that I know next to nothing about your tractor pulls in other parts of the country, and nothing about the NTPA since we don't have any of their events around here that I know of.
I'd just say be aware of how much money is really generated and the true cost to hold a pull and maybe you'd not be so likely to pay what ever to just to put on a show for the spectators. I know that I am selective of the pulls I go to and therefore to whom my money goes.
