Sounds like time for a new TA, John, or, your primary hydraulic system won't pressure the TA clutches. How is your power steering and brakes? If those work okay, it is likely your clutch packs and sprag clutch in the TA are worn out. In low range, a one-way clutch picks up the power, and a clutch pack engages to hold power on downhills and slowdowns. In high, a clutch pack transmits the power. It sounds like your TA has been slowly going out, and is coming to a halt. TA's have been improved immensely, with better materials, and now there is a "mechanical diode" design that is absolutely bulletproof.
