When you in the direct drive of the TA, The TA clutch is engaged and the whole TA planetery assemble rotates. When you pull the TA lever back for the low side you disengage the TA clutch and the planetary assembly actually tries to counter rotate. This is where the overrun clutch (ramp and roller assembly) will lock the planetary assembly to stop it from counter rotating. When these ramp and rollers get worn they will not lock up the Planetary assembly allowing it to counter rotate and your tractor will stop. For your other questing, No it will not hurt to pull your tractor leaving your TA in Direct drive. As far as a TA eliminator kit, there is or was one but I don't know why anyone would go to all the work to remove the TA and put one in. If you split your tractor to install the eliminator kit you might as well just fix your TA. They are very handy.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
