806 Steering Play

There is play in the steering of my wide-front 806. It is coming from the joint between the spindle and steering arm. This is a splined connection and the splines are worn. I need to repair this on both sides of the font end. New spindles and steering arms come to over $600. Before laying out this kind of dough, I thought I would try to repair it by drilling a 5/16 dia hole all the way through the steering arm and spindle (at the splines) and inserting a solid steel pin. I figure I don't have anything to lose because if this doesn't work out, then I just buy the new parts. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to repair this?
