There is a difference in the ring grooves on the pistons. The top groove is wider on one. I don't think the parts book lists the crater pistons, as they were a later deal, I think. Anyway, there are two different pistons, and two different sets of rings for the old M's. As far as I know, the only way to tell what pistons are in yours is to take them out and measure the grooves. That's what I had to do anyway.
