Tom - make sure cylinder #1 is brought to Top Dead Center on the compression stroke (both valves closed), the timing mark on the crank pulley (second one) should be in line with the pointer on the block. Now position the rotor such that it is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire. Now try to start it. If it backfires, the spark plug wires may be connected incorrectly. If you still have trouble starting it, check the timing. The impulse coupling of the magneto should click when the engine is rotated to TDC. If you do not hear a click at this position, the timing should be adjusted. Check the archives on this procedure. Let us know how you make out.....Bill V.
