BMD,BWD6 engine questions.

I was told that the British made BMD engines were based on the gas engine block I know that the gas engine block only has 3 main bearings and the deisel block has 5 main bearings. Why are the BMD and BWD6 engines based on the gas block. Is the gas block with 3 mains heavy enough for a high compression deisel engine? Does anyone know how well they hold up? I am very curious. Thanks.
