The T/A, like brakes and clutches, has wear parts. Unlike brakes and clutches, it's non-essential and expensive to repair. So when one did fail it often went unfixed. And they were much more likely to fail if not kept properly adjusted. Much as we hate to say it of our fellow humans, most of us operate by the "If it ain't broke don't check the oil" rule. It wasn't until I started lurking around this board that I realized that IH continued put T/As on tractors after the 560/460 series. Apparently my granddad had so many problems with customers who got them on the '50s and '60s that he just didn't order them for the '06's and after.
