Most really early tractors did not have battery, starter, generator, ext. The magnito, plugs, and plug wires were the entire electrical system. The magnito was in time with and turned by the engine and produced and distributed its own spark to the plug wires and plugs. A spark impulse and a spark adjustment lever were common on mags which made hand cranking them much easier. When battery's, starters, and generators came to be common on tractors the mag slowly disappeared and distributors became common. A distributor doesn't produce its own electicity. It gets it from the battery/charging system.
