If you saw just a whisp of smoke, that's normal. It's simply condensation leaving the (hot) crankcase. Likewise a whisp showing when the motor is running is OK to - that's normal blowby. But if you see a steady, solid stream of vapor with the motor running, that says you've got problems inside the motor.
