Doug: Theres been many post about this in the past. Be sure and search these ARCHIVES. Switch to gas mode and normal gas type starting.. choke if cold temps etc. Allow to warm on gas. The IHC originally called for a one minute gas run at a standard engineering day which is 59 degrees at sea level. (so much for the book) Then you may pull on some diesel and shut off gas mode. It'll smoke a bit befor ya get the gas lever switched off. After working hard and its HOT, run at maybe half throttle and allow water temp to cool which is cooling the ALL IMPORTANT CYLINDER HEAD. then switch back to gas for half minute and shut electrical switch off..AND return gas lever to OFF. Stored with gas and diesel OFF. Very important to allow cylinder head to cool off. I almost always reduced smoking plugs up by switching gas lever off QUICKLY and only then QUICKLY pulling on some diesel throttle. We bought a new early MD and then SMD and run a combined 20 years WITHOUT any head problems. Great engine.. if treated right. ralph
