It all depends on what all is wrong , most times it is the shifter shaft that goes into the rev shift fork or the rev shift fork has broken . have you pulled the side cover off ? and looked at it ? If you must remove the rev side shaft the yes you must tare the rear end down , both rear axels brakes bull gears ring and pinion the works then split at the speed trans.
