1/4 X pi X d squared X hydraulic pressure available. That is to figure the force you can get from a hydraulic cylinder take diameter X diameter X 3.14 and divide by 4. That gives you the area of the cylinder. Then multiply that by the psi available from the hydraulic system. For a 3 inch cylinder. 1/4 x 3 x 3 x 3.14 x 2000 psi equals 14,130 pounds of force the cylinder can generate. If you are useing the return stroke, you have to take away the area of the rod, which is usually 1 inch diameter. Also, the force the cylinder can generate is not the whole story. The geometry of the loader set up has a lot to do with it too. If the cylinder moves 8 inches and the load moves 24, then the force applied to the load will be reduced to 1/3 of the cylinder force or for the 3 inch diameter cylinder, 4710 lbs. That force can also be variable depending on the geometry, as sometimes the loader may move faster toward the end of the cylinder stroke. As you can see, not a simple solution.
