There are 3 thrust washers on reverse idler shaft, if the front one is missing, that would allow gear to move forward enough that shift collar would "grind" or not engage. Rev idler shaft can be removed from the front of range trans housing after splitting. When installing rev idler shaft, remave hitch pump & look/make sure lube pipe is in center of shaft.
