That isn't a tab of the gasket sticking out the side, is it? Take a compression test and put a thermostat in and change the oil. Then go work it for a day or so. Keep checking the oil and water. Let us know what you find. Sometimes there is a tab that sticks out to the side on gaskets... don't know what they are there for but... good luck sod
