1066 Reverse problem pin-pointed!

I took the side cover off, when I shift to reverse, the reverse drive gear is pushed foward - out of the way - unless the teeth are lined up just right. What is supposed to hold the gear in place on the shaft? Is there a way to fix this without tearing down the entire backend? P.S.: The Tractor Vet knows his stuff! I used his tip about parking the tractor on a slope before removing the side cover - Might have lost a cup of transmission oil! Thanks guys - keep up the good work!
