1066 Reverse problem narrowed down!

I took the side cover off, when I shift to reverse, the reverse drive gear is pushed foward - out of the way - unless the teeth are lined up just right. What is supposed to hold the gear in place on the shaft? Is there a way to fix this without tearing down the entire backend? Tractor Vet's tip on parking the tractor on a slope before removing the side plate is a good one! I didn't loose a cup of oil! Thanks guys - Keep up the good work!
