In your example: if resistance stays the same and voltage is increased to 12 volts, amperage will double to 20 amps. To put that in terms of watts, the wattage will increase from 120 to 240 watts. So much for theory. In reality, it's going to depend on lots of other things like engine speed, electrical load, etc. Keep in mind that if you use a 6 volt generator on 12 volts, the field is going to have twice as much current flowing through it as it was designed for. Can it handle it without smoking? Probably - based on some of the messages posted here from people who have done it. It will probably work just fine unless you have a low battery or heavy electrical load, then that generator field or regulator just might go up in smoke. If you don't care about originality, a 12 volt alternator with built-in regulator is your best bet, especially if you want something reliable.
