I just put the Liftall back in my H and left the shaft out. I had taken the unit out to do some transmission work and just covered the hole with a plate when I was done, planning to rebuild the pump later. I've put off the work on the pump, spent the money on the dog, and put it back in just to get it up off the floor.
It's quite likely that whoever took the shaft off yours had a reason, too.
