AP, I agree with the Red. I had a brake frozen on an H and it was a marathon trying to get it off. We spent most of half a day. We sprayed penetrant onto the brake lever where it goes into the tractor transmission frame. We heated the area with a torch, we tried everything. Finally we had the cover sprung enough to get the lip of a large pinch bar between the flange of the brake lever and the tractor. My friend wiggled on the brake arm with vise grips over the end for extra leverage and my other friend gave the pinch bar a whack with the sledge while I held it in place. It took four good clouts to get it out. It had been rusted solidly into the tractor, there was hardly anything left of the brass bushing. I couldn't believe how tight it was or how hard it was to get out. I reamed the hole out with a wire brush on the end of the drill and bought new brass bushings . Every thing went together well. I did the drum seals while I was at it and cleaned up the original bands and adjusted them. I can slide both rear wheels on the gravel lane. Someone mentioned WD40 and I've never had any luck with it. WD stands for "water displacement". It is good to use to dry up things like a wet distributor..spray on, wipe off and its dry. It has some silicon base but dries up quickly. I used to use it on my car doors but they would be squeaking in a few weeks. Since I started working in an auto shop we use a product called "Move-It" and I'll swear by it..any penetrating oil will work fairly well also.Good luck with the frozen brake, be patient, keep wiggling and tapping...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract. ... [Read Article]
