Decided today was the day to change the Hy-Tran in the Farmal 504 that I bought last fall. I've got a few choice words to say to the IH engineer who specified those female plugs, and more choice words to the heavy handed brute who tightened them last! The rear one is a 1/2 hole, a perfect fit for my 1/2" ratchet handle. Took some heavy grunting to get that thing loose. The front one needed a 5/16 square shank to get it out, only it wouldn't come out. Had to take the entire cover plate off and apply heat to get that @#$#@ out! I replaced the front one (since my efforts ruined the square hole) with standard pipe plug. Then used that white pipe sealant tape to help ensure a dripless seal, and so that they would not need to be tightened so hard! The hyd fluid looked like it was as old as my mother-in-law, so having those plugs so tight probably didn't matter to the previous owner! Next time I change the Hy-Tran, I should be finished in about half the time it took me today! Some of the IH purists my gasp at the thought of using a common pipe plug, But this is a working tractor, and I find myself getting annoyed at those plugs with the square holes! WW

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
