Magneto Advice Needed, Please

A friend is working on his ol M. He wants to replace a worn out Dist with a Mag.

He says that he can get a H-4 mag from a old IH "WD6 or WD9" will it work on his gas model "M".

I am not sure about this, I thought that they turned backwards compaired to the gas model.
