Super MTA : TA and IPTO

I might, I repeat, MIGHT have the chance to buy a nice Super MTA. It is supposed to be above average, low hours on rebuilt engine, etc. but the TA is beginning to give trouble. Sounds like it's not completely out, but getting bad. I've read about how it's usually the ramps and rollers, occasionally the TA clutch. How can I "road test" it to know which is causing problems, or can I tell without opening it up? IF I decide to go look at it and indeed the TA is giving trouble, can't I run it in direct drive indefinately with no trouble? Also, what to look for on the PTO? The Independent PTO on these tractors sort of "scare" me. Thanks,
