R Wiler, it is still not too late to drain the pulley gear to get out water, sludge etc. You should add some gear oil to the gear box, once you start the pulley the tractor throws oil up into the gearbox, by adding oil you prevent any damage untill you get the pulley loading its own oil, those old M 's were tough..good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
