Karl F: This will be a tough one. Without the original block, we've lost the only internal cross reference point for serial numbers that I know of. (And even then, the sn on the block -- look for a small milled flat surface just behind the coil -- didn't necessarily match up with the sn for the tractor). Other castings are parts numbers. Do you have any old paperwork on the tractor, like an old bill of sale? All is not lost, though. On the deck, left side, near the front, below the clutch pedal, you'll find a day-month-year code that will clue us to the date the deck was cast,... and so an approximate assembly date for the tractor! Days and months were numbered. The years were coded by letter, starting with the letter "H" corresponding to 1938. So look for a Q (=1947), R (=1948), S (=1949),... for a real good guess as to when your tractor rolled off the line for some proud farmer, home from The War, happy to be done feeding horses, and eager to show off his shiny red Farmall. Good luck, and keep on wrenching. RedTed/MO.

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
