1974 started with 34949, 1975 started with 46855, so yours is a 1974 about mid year. The other numbers 261 meant Kind to IH, the 0172 meant Code, this was a number for a complete Farmall 1066 diesel with a certain group of options, maybe a cab & hitch,TA, etc, the serial U0040581 meant with a U leading was made in USA, Dealer invoice and all warranty claims, shipping receipts from trucks, had this as Id. This was a standard set-up for all serial numbered IH AG equip, Combines, Tractors, Cub Cadets, Power Units, particularly anything with a engine.
