Have done what you are thinking about (putting the temp gage on the top of a thermosiphon system) and then you get just the opposite. The gage reads over 200 degrees after warmup all the while. This is as it should be. In order to circulate, the coolant must be heated to about boiling, gets lighter as a result, rises, and is displaced by whatever temp coolant is below it. I'm gonna change mine to a lower position someday....... Rather experiment with variable speed fan than shutters. Ooooooo now the purists will shudder!!! (Working Cub)
