I think you are right on, and expressing the idea that makes this site work. There is no way that all these tractors are being restored for economic gain. In fact, the market value of a restored tractor is less than the sum of the parts added, not counting the restorer's time at all. It is a labor of love, restorining old tractors. Restoring yesterday for tomorrow, as the bumper sticker I saw said. I believe it and practice it. Getting even more on my soapbox, I think this hobby owes a bunch to the folks that are derisively called Yuppies. It is not only the farmers that are restoring old tractors. It is the farmer wannabees that are living a country life on the weekends. I resemble that remark.
