I completly rebuilt the steering assembly on my 1945 A, the play in the steering wheel was nearly a half turn, now its about 2" which is about what I remember them being when new. My box had been run with grease rather than oil for god only knows how long. The grease never really made it down to the sector gear or the insert. The top bearing was overly greased but that was about it. I had a machine shop rebuild the sector shaft and bore a new bronze bearing. Frankly, the top ball bearing was so cheap and I had it out, that I just replaced it. The machine shop tightened up the keyway and supplied a new key. I as recall the guy charged me about $60.00, I supplied the bronz bearing insert that I got from the IH dealer and it cost less than $10. The sector gear and worm gear looked good and I reused them as they were. I suspect the little play I have is that wear. If your's are more worn, a machine shop could reface them, I've never seen them offered new either by a IH dealer or an aftermarket supplier. I found that much of the play was the result of worn ball joints. These are available, for a price, and the inserts are available from an IH dealer if you can get by with your existing balls. Frankly, the steering rebuilding was the easist and most rewarding of the entire project. I replaced the bronze bearings in the steering axles as well. The IH parts book says they come pre-sized, but they were not. Maybe just as well, the shop reamed them out to match the shaft wear. Good luck.

With Ben, anyway, I can tell! He'll be busy working and I’m handing him tools and he says, "give me that..." and I’ve already got it in his hand or "hand me that....."and I’ve got the portable light right where he needed it placed to see. "Run in the house and get me a...."as I open th
