Unless you are going to mount the saw to the frame of your H, you need a long belt, primarily to aid in tensioning. A long belt uses the weight of the belt to tension. It has lots of sag when tight enough to drive, where a short belt is almost straight. So you can get the proper tension on a long belt and still move the tractor an inch either way. A short belt may need the tractor adjusted within a tenth of an inch. It is real hard to back up a tractor and hold it less than half an inch. Long belts are also more forgiving on alignment. If you have your saw staked down and it moves a little and the belt jumps off and you have to move the tractor every two minutes the fun soon goes away. A 40 ft belt is long enough, but 60 ft is not too long. A 30 ft belt is getting a little short. Belt work is great fun! I left my 50 ft belt out and the cows ruined it over the winter so I'm looking for used belting. Narrow conveyer belting can also be used and is found in longer lengths than used round baler belts. Two or more can be spliced together.
