Grant that is exactly what I did with my 51H. I preferred the VR on top of the generator. If you have $35 or so, Ken Updike has the harness. It's a tad short from the original but will do. 608-455-2411. If you want to make one, either do a 12-2 house wire or 12-3 if you want the coil wire to route with the other two. Do you have a low charge, high charge, dim light, bright light switch as the first question? Assuming you have the above switch, its pretty simple to wire. The wire from the bat terminal on the VR goes to the right post on the ampmeter when you are looking at the back of the light switch plate. This right post should also have your wire to the light assembly and to the coil switch. The left ampmeter post is from the battery via the starter switch. The second wire goes from the field post off the generator to the lower farthest right hand screw on the light switch assembly.
