Cant follow your description of a snap ring on the worm shaft, this failure is not uncommon on a tractor of this age, I have seen the screw in plug that holds the bearing in fail, usually caused by not putting in the correct bearing from IH, a lot of the repair bearing furnished is wrong design or type, You must use IH part ST678, its a combination thrust & ball bearing, the part that appears to be a snap ring could be part of the failed bearing, there is no snap ring used in this area as originally built by IH.
