I just don't think they had a smaller (than the 400) diesel engine ready. So, they outsourced the
350 for one year & then had a motor of their own ready for the 460 when it came out. I've got a 350D, it's a good engine, but parts are difficult. They probably weren't thinking ahead this far in '57. If they had it wouldn't be CIH/NH/whatever comes next!
