Will, are you saying the shift lever won't physically move into the proper place or that when you move the shift lever, the gears don't engage? In either case, you will probably need to remove the transmission cover to check things out. With the cover off, you should be able to see where your interference is coming from if the levers won't physically move. You would also be able to see the condition of the shifter forks, and if you have an I&T manual, you can check to make sure the forks are properly installed. You should also check the detent balls and springs, to make sure the detent spring cavity hasn't packed full of rust and gunk preventing the balls from moving.
