I have one as well and it should have notches to hold it in on or off positions. Mine has a button on top of the lever to push in to unlock it from these notches. Maybe yours is missing? Also mine is a diesel as well, beware the diesels are known to have engine sleeves shatter into the oil pan, this happened to me last spring. Had to put new pistons, sleeves, rings and bearings in. Tractor looks like new and only had 1600 hours at the time.
