Farmall(A)scratching my bald head, what is it?

Just bought a Farmall 1946(A) with the letters
(BN) on the hood. Questions I have are, did
someone change hoods from a (B), or as I have
seen on this web site,an(A)BN. What's BN stand
for, what is the difference in an (A) and
an (A) BN. Have looked in a number of tractor
books but have not found the answer yet......
