One solution is to install a battery isolation switch in either of the battery cables. Open the switch after you shut down and your battery will be safe. The alternative is to stick a switch in the line between the alternator BAT terminal and the ammeter. This switch must have a minimum rating at least equal to the full alternator output (stamped on the case - usually 55 or 61 amps). With either of these alternatives you must be very careful NOT to open the switch whenever the motor is running. Doing so is likely to destroy the alternator!! A diode between the alternator and the battery will not work here. Reason: Voltage drop across the diode (a little over 1 volt) will "fool" the internal voltage resulting in a chronic undervoltage condition - hence an undercharged battery.
