OK - the backward reading ammeter with the battery connected negative ground says the ammeter is still wired for positive ground. Most likely is the coil is too.

I can almost guarantee the voltage regulator is fried. Recommend replacing it with a new one. Then reconnect the battery for positive ground and polarize the generator. Finally start it up and see if it charges.
If it does, it's time to celebrate(!)
But if it does not, walk thru the generator/regulator troubleshooting chart on my next post below. It will help you isolate the cause of the "no charge" condition.
