Electrial- Relay?

I have a 52 MD all original have owned for several years. It came to NC from Iowa when I bought it. For all those years the charging system didn't work. The gear on the starter went bad so I decided to get that fixed plus the 12 volt generator and also had the RELAY checked by the gen. shop. My relay hooks up to the back of the radiator just like the owners manual shows. It also has the original 4 position light switch. I hooked up everything by the original diagram on page 75 in o. manual, postive ground and everthing. But No juice. I think it might be a ground, does the relay need to be grounded????
I read through archives last night and I'm not sure. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
