Need Transmission Help Fast!!!

WHile changing the oil in the rear of my 450, I found a steel ball about 5/8" dia. No other metal other than normal shavings. Parts book shows 4 balls called "poppets". Are these the detent balls and springs? Is this the right size for these poppets or could it be a bearing. The ball looks too big for a bearing but I've never had one apart so I can't be sure. will it hurt to run the tractor with a poppet missing? it dosen't pop out of gear. Sorry so long, and thanks in advance. Steve
