If you can, try to take the valve cover off (2 bolts) and the spark plugs out. If it's a valve you make be able to tell when you get the cover off. If this doesn't work, perhaps the sparks plugs will tell you at little about what's going on. You could also try the hand crank to see if you feel anything. All in all though it sounds like something very bad happened, so it comes down to the condition of the remaining tractor, and price. I'm sure the guys on here will give you some prices if you describe the condition of the Tractor and what all comes with it. Does it have hydraulics ? You can get plenty of parts to rebuild the engine, it all comes down to money. If the engine was worn out enough where parts start breaking, expect big bucks. My 2 cents.
