That light was a later improvement of the plain white rear. It had a switch that would be mounted on the top and gave you in turn, white, red, and off for the rear light, so it was possible to have the front lights on with no light to the rear. There were two different knobs, one plastic and one knurled metal. My '51 SuperC had the original with a metal knob, but the switch was shot and the knob rusted on so badly I couldn't swap it with the plastic knob on the new light.
