I think you might need that felt amd retainer. I believe it's needed to keep the grease in and the dirt out for the thrust bearing. On mine there was enough wear that the felt was entirely gone and the retainer was worn down to paper thin. Go ahead and use the extra week to get the bushings out ;-) It took me an hour and a half to get the top one out, poking down from the top with every thing I could try, tearing out little bits and pieces. I gave up and declared the bottom one ok, didn't need replacing. It really didn't look bad except that around the bottom edge it was grown together with the cast. Putting the seal back in the top is, as somebody else mentioned, sort of tricky. So was the one on the steering shaft. I wasn't to pleased with my work on either one. Made me glad my uncle told me that cup grease was so much better nowadays that it was ok to use that instead of 90wt.
