I did this same proceedure to my H, 300 and 560 over years. When it happened I always had another newer or repaired one to compare with. The bottom 3/4 of an inch is all you have to build up. As I remember you can build it to point where it is a loose fit in transmission shift rails. It should have straight sides and square corners. I always built it over size and ground it to fit. Put it in when its still quite snugg. If it won't shift or doesn't shift smooth, you can grind a bit more. Get it to point where you can use a bit and the marks on end itself will show you where to grind.
