Rollie if everything checks out in the ignition and the carb, I would be suspicious of the manifold, this might explain the long term problem. Check it with propane or acytelene by blowing the unlighted gas around the manifold as the tractor runs..if it smooths out you know you have a manifold problem. It could be a small crack or the gasket is bad or it needs to be planed smooth to fit the head. I'm not overlooking your suggestion about a valve, but this propane test is easy and can help you diagnose...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
